Before being pregnant with my first son, I had never really heard of baby wearing, or paid attention to any other moms baby wearing.

But while I was pregnant with him, I learned about all the different possibilities for carriers and all the reasons I should wear my baby.

Choosing a baby carrier can be difficult because everyone’s lifestyles are different. Every carrier works differently for different sized babies and different stages that babies are in.

Advantages of Baby Wearing

There are so many advantages to wearing your baby, for both you and your baby, from health benefits to pure convenience.

  • It helps regulate your baby’s body temperature, heart rate and breathing patterns
  • Strengthens bonding between baby and mama (or another caretaker)
  • Reduces fussiness in babies
  • Helps babies adjust to life outside the womb (after being in there for 9 months!)
  • Mamas are able to be more responsive to baby’s needs quicker
  • Contact naps
  • Promotes milk production through release of oxytocin between you and your baby
  • It makes life easier – more free hands!

Baby Carriers and Wraps for Every Need

There are so many different carriers and wraps out there. They are all great in their own ways, but you want to choose one that works best for you and your baby.

No matter what, you want a good carrier that won’t hurt your neck and back, and can support your baby in all the best ways.

So, here’s a list and description of some of the best and most popular ones.

Wraps

Wraps tend to be really great for newborns. They are not as structured, nice and stretchy, and more adjustable. It can be a learning experience getting them to wrap and feel right, but most of them have videos online you can follow. Once you have it down they are amazing for comfort for both you and your baby.

Boba Wraps

I love the Boba Serenity Wrap because it’s made from a stretchy, breathable, organic bamboo blend of fabrics. Because it’s so stretchy, yet still supportive, it tends to be better suited for younger babies from newborns up to 12 months.

The Classic Boba Wrap is also a great choice and will last you a bit longer, but is not as stretchy or adjustable. It is however a bit more supportive because of the different fabric, and will last you until your baby is approximately 18 months.

Either of these wraps are great because even though they are stretchy they tend to hold their shape better than most other wraps.

New Native

The New Native Carrier is great because you get all the benefits of having a wrap, without the extra bulk. You can use it multiple ways, including on your hip and in the front. You just sling it around you and put your baby in however they comfortable!

It is free of any straps, buckles or rings and is good for babies 8-35 lbs. It’s also made in the U.S.!

Solly Baby

Solly Baby has a wrap that is good for babies 8-25 lbs, and a soft loop carrier that is good for babies 15-45 lbs. The loop carrier is a bit more supportive for the older babies, but still stretchy enough that it will adjust for comfort to the weight of your baby. It also comes in two different sizes.

The wrap is more adjustable as wraps are, and a super stretchy, soft material to comfort your little one.

They also have some super cute pajamas and swaddles! Check them out!

Baby K’tan

The Baby K’tan has a wrap-carrier hybrid situation, meaning you get the best of both worlds. They come in different sizes, so take a look at their sizing chart to determine which would be best for you.

It can be worn in a few different ways and and is made of a soft but durable material that holds it’s shape so your baby doesn’t pull the wrap down on your back with their weight.

It’s so easy to just throw on and put your baby in!

Soft Structured Carriers

If you are looking for something with a little more structure, or for an older baby, I would go with one of these carriers. Carriers are easier to use out and about, and offer slightly more support. However, they are a little less adjustable and customizable for every body type, and it may take you a few to find the right one for you.

Most of them can be used forward face, outward facing, and possibly even on your back. You want to keep a newborn facing you until at least 6 months.

Most of them will also come with a newborn insert you can put in for more support during the newborn stage and can take out when they are older.

Boba Carrier

The Boba X Carrier is super lightweight, adjustable, and good for ages 0-36 months. It’s very soft and breathable, and will last you through anything you have to do with your baby hands free.

I love how easy this one is adjust even while you are already wearing it.

Ergo Baby

Ergo Baby has so many different carriers that are great for different reasons. Most of them are perfect for any age. The Ergo embrace is best for newborns and has the best support for their fragile hips. It’s a super simple, cozy design.

The Ergo Aerloom is one of my favorites. It has the softest material of all of their carriers, a simple design and perfect for newborns and up. It’s super light and has mesh exterior to create a wonderful airflow.

Baby Bjorn

The Baby Bjorn Mini Carrier is one of the most popular on the market. It has another simple design that doesn’t compromise support and comfort.

It is especially perfect for newborns, but can be used for babies up to about 12 months.

Any of these carriers are great for so many different reasons! There are so many on the market, but this narrows down some of the best ones for you.
