Winter newborn essentials

Let’s get down to business! Your newborn will need clothing, blankets, a few accessories, a stroller, a carrier, a car seat cover, and hats – Lots of hats!

1. Car seat cover

Dressing a newborn baby in the wintertime is one of the most tricky parts of having a fall or winter baby.

Overdressing a newborn can impact car seat safety, so you’ll want to be aware of the layers if you are taking a car ride.

You can avoid compromising your car seat safety by avoiding bulky clothing and avoiding putting the baby in a jacket before strapping the car seat up.

So how do you keep baby warm in the car seat? A car seat cover like this and some blankets.

Put the car seat cover on when you are not in the vehicle, and once you buckle the seat into the car, take the cover off.

There are a few different styles of car seat covers, and you’ll want to choose the one that fits your lifestyle best.

Here are a few parents’ favorites:

2. Sleepers with closed feet

Cuteness factor aside, you’re going to want a good number of footie pajamas to keep your baby warm. These are great because you don’t have to worry so much about socks!

3. Baby sleep sack

You should never put any loose or bulky items in the crib with your baby. This includes stuffed animals, bumper pads, and blankets.

So, how do you keep baby warm while they sleep if you can’t use blankets? Sleep sacks or wearable blankets like this!

Just remember that sleep sacks are very warm and cozy, so you want to be extra sure to not overdress your baby under the sack.

4. Long sleeve onesies

You can never have too many onesies… never ever. Register for a lot of these because you’re going to go through them quickly as babies go through several outfits per day.

You can get long-sleeved onesies in cute patterns or just rock basic white and neutral ones.

5. Little socks

Socks are on our list of newborn winter essentials for a reason! They keep those cute little toes toasty and warm! Register for plenty pairs of these as well.

6. Hats

You’ll want a good collection of baby hats as well. From basic newborn hats to hats with ear flaps, be sure to have a nice stockpile.

7. A good baby thermometer

You should have a good thermometer regardless of the time of year your baby is born in. However, a winter baby means baby is arriving in the midst of cold and flu season, so this is really important and worth mentioning.

You may also want to grab a bath thermometer as well – These can be really helpful to have!

8. Nasal aspirator

In addition to a thermometer, you will also need a really good nasal aspirator. And, no, preferably not one of those old-school ones that tend to grow mold!

Instead, try an electric nasal aspirator to keep baby’s nose clear.

9. Moisturizer

The winter months also mean dry skin. Go ahead and grab some moisturizer for baby. We really like the Evereden Baby Moisturizing Lotion. It’s non-toxic, plant-based, and EWG-verified.

10. Stroller accessories such as a stroller rain cover and footmuff

A rain cover for your stroller is the perfect way to protect your baby from rain, snow, and wind. It will also help keep your baby warm, so you can enjoy the outdoors without worrying about the weather – even during the winter.

We review our favorite stroller rain covers in this post as well as what to look for when choosing the best one.

Another product you may want to consider is a stroller footmuff.

If you’ve never heard of these (I know, the name is a little funny!), they are kind of like a sleeping bag for the stroller. It’s a convenient way to keep your baby warm and cozy without any extra jackets or blankets.

What to bring baby home from the hospital in during winter

The car ride home with a winter baby can be a little intimidating. Newborns are tiny and can weigh 5-8 pounds when you’re bringing them home, which means you’re going to want to be very mindful with your new addition’s outfit choice.

As a coming home outfit you may opt to dress your baby in some adorable footed pajamas and a warm hat. Or, you could choose a long-sleeve onesie paired with some tiny pants, socks, and a matching hat.

When you are placing your baby in the car seat for the ride home, remember not to add any additional jackers or puffy layers as this compromises car seat safety rules.

Also remember that the hospital will not allow you to bring the baby home without a car seat, so be prepared!

It may a good idea to go ahead and install the car seat once you’ve packed your hospital bag.

That’s the top 10 winter newborn essentials!

Registering for these key items will help you prepare for your winter baby. From sleep sacks and long sleeve onesies to hats and a nasal aspirator, make sure you have everything you need before your little one arrives.
